What is a v92 access number?
The term 'V92' relates to the new modem technology. Older modems are V90, and
can only connect at speeds up to 56 kilobits. With a V92 modem, and a V92 access
number, you can connect to the Internet at speeds 200% faster than an older, V90
modem. Note that a V92 modem does not have to use only V92 access numbers.
What is v92 modem-on-hold? How does it
work?
V.92 modem technology allows the user to pause the internet connection and
receive an incoming call. The amount of time you can place your Internet
connection on hold while taking another call is 3.5 minutes. Your V.92 modem may
include software that will warn you when the timeout time approaches, as well as
to display call-waiting and caller-id info (requires call-waiting/caller-id
service with your phone company).
What is a Kilobit?
In data communications, a kilobit is a thousand bits. It's commonly used for
measuring the amount of data that is transferred in a second between two
telecommunication points. Kilobits per second is usually shortened to Kbps.
What does 56k mean?
56,000 bits per second.
What is meant by the term dial-up?
All computers are equiped with a modem. For desktops, the modem is internal. For
laptops, the modem is external.
A modem is a device that connects to a phone jack and "dials up" a telephone number. In Internet terms, that telephone number is usually referred to as an access number - it enables you - the internet user - to connect to the Internet. Access numbers are what you use an internet service provider for as they supply all the access numbers.
If you listen closely to your computer, you will actually here the beeps of a access number getting dialed, just like a regular call.
I have a 56K modem, why can't I
connect at 56K?
In reality, analog throughput is limited to a maximum of 53.333kbps per FCC
regulations. Although 53.333kbps is the maximum speed, some operating systems
may incorrectly report a higher speed.
The connection speed is very dependent on the phone line quality, the hardware/software, and environmental conditions. It can fluctuate.
To make sure you connect at the maximum speed, you can verify that you have the latest update on your software programs and modem drivers (check your hardware and software vendors' web sites) and unplug any other equipment using the same phone line as your modem.
You should try different access numbers in your area (using a different path thru the phone network you might get a better connection). You should try again and see if you get a better speed at a different time (this may fluctuate during the day and over time).
